Is Microsoft 365 Business Premium Enough to Secure a Small Business?

Microsoft 365 Business Premium is the most common licensing tier we see when we start working with a new client, and for good reason: it bundles genuinely capable security tools alongside the productivity apps most businesses already know. The confusion we run into constantly is the assumption that owning the license means those tools are protecting the business. In our experience, they usually are not — at least not yet.

What Business Premium actually includes

Business Premium licenses Microsoft Defender for Business, Microsoft Intune, and Entra ID with Conditional Access. Each of those is a real, enterprise-grade capability. Defender provides endpoint detection and response. Intune manages and secures devices. Conditional Access lets you require multifactor authentication and restrict sign-ins based on risk. None of it does anything on its own — every one of these tools ships off, unconfigured, waiting for someone to turn it on and tune it to the business.

Where the gaps usually are

  • Multifactor authentication enabled for some users but not enforced tenant-wide
  • Legacy authentication protocols left open, which lets attackers bypass MFA entirely
  • Defender for Business licensed but never activated on endpoints
  • No Conditional Access policies restricting risky sign-ins
  • Admin accounts with far more privilege than the person doing the job actually needs
  • Each of these is fixable in hours, not months. The problem is rarely the tooling — it is that nobody owns the ongoing work of configuring, monitoring, and adjusting it as the business changes.

    The honest answer

Business Premium gives a small business the building blocks of a secure environment. It is not, by itself, a secure environment. Getting from 'licensed' to 'secured' requires a deliberate implementation pass and ongoing administration — which is exactly the gap our Secure Business Foundation service is built to close.
